What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping and checkout mediated by AI agents — discovering products, comparing offers, and purchasing on behalf of users or businesses — with trust, payment authorization, and merchant integration as first-class problems.

In depth

ChatGPT Shopping, Google AI Mode, and checkout APIs point to a shift: buyers delegate discovery and comparison to agents. Agentic commerce means agents that browse catalogs, read reviews, negotiate bundles, and initiate payment — not only recommend links.

For businesses, the flip side is being machine-readable: structured product data, clear policies, citation-friendly specs, and APIs agents can trust. AI search analytics tracks how models cite and recommend your offers.

Risks: unauthorized purchases, wrong SKU, fraud. Mitigation mirrors enterprise agents — Ask before pay, spend limits, merchant allow-lists, receipt logs.

B2B agentic commerce looks like procurement agents comparing vendors, drafting POs, and routing approval — same governance pattern as customer support agents.

Examples

  • Consumer — assistant compares laptops and checks out with user approval
  • Merchant — product feed optimized for AI shopping surfaces
  • B2B — ops agent drafts PO; finance approves in Ask queue
  • AI search — brand cited in ChatGPT shopping comparison
