Developer email APIs get compared with scorecards that pretend one number can rank a send fabric and an inbox product. In 2026 a better approach is jobs-to-be-done. Here are six APIs developers actually shortlist—Agent Inbox, Resend, SendGrid, Mailgun, Amazon SES, and Postmark—mapped to the job each wins, without a fake composite score.

Most “best API” articles smash A–D together. Developers then buy A and wonder why D is missing.

Evaluation checklist for your spike

For whichever two APIs remain after the job filter, run the same spike: create credentials, send a message, receive a reply fixture, store or load history, attempt a threaded response, and gate a send behind a human approval. Time the glue. Count new tables. Note what breaks when headers are ugly. The API that wins the spike against your real loop is the shortlist winner—not the one with the catchiest landing page.

Also record non-goals. If marketing blasts are out of scope for the agent, do not score APIs on campaign features. If acting as an employee’s Gmail is out of scope, do not score OAuth to consumer mailboxes. Jobs-to-be-done only works when the non-jobs stay written down.

How to shortlist in an afternoon

Write the agent loop in one sentence. If there is no reply, shortlist SES, SendGrid, Mailgun, Resend, or Postmark based on cloud preference and transactional needs. If there is a reply that continues work, shortlist Agent Inbox and only keep a send API for separate notification streams.
