How to take time off
Types of paid time off
Sick days
Purpose: physical ailment. Timing: usually last-minute. Approval: not required (manager discussion needed if over 2 consecutive days). Amount: unlimited.
Vacation
Purpose: employee-selected, no purpose disclosure required. Timing: request roughly 2x days in advance (minimum one week). Approval: no approval needed, but coordination with manager is expected. Amount: 20 days/year.
Family leave
Purpose: biological/adopted child onboarding. Timing: coordinate 3-6 months ahead. Approval: no approval needed, no penalty allowed. Amount: 3 months split across one year.
Holidays
Purpose: flexible rest/celebration days. Timing: notify team during the same week. Approval: not required. Amount: 10/year (US holidays or local alternatives).
How to request PTO
- Ping your manager with written details.
- Share dates and a coverage plan if needed.
- Add the request in Rippling.
You do not need to disclose why you are taking time off.
How to leave for PTO
- Set email autoresponder.
- Set Slack OOO status.
- Add time off to the team OOO calendar.
- Document tasks others may need to cover.
- Share updates with manager/stakeholders.
- Post a sign-off reminder in
#all-afk.
Working while on PTO
Working during PTO is not expected unless there is a pre-agreed arrangement.
- You return more restored and productive.
- The team discovers single-owner gaps that should be fixed.
- The business stays healthy when people can truly disconnect.
